The change to WHMIS in 2015 was a big one! For years we have been hearing about changes to the WHMIS regulations in Canada to be more aligned with the WHMIS regulations in other countries, especially countries who supply products to Canada as well as suppliers in Canada who export their products to other countries.
In the long term, the addition of the GHS revisions to WHMIS regulations will help to ensure consistency in the labelling and better communication of the health and safety information on hazardous products. It will lead to increased worker safety, which is one of the main intents of the WHMIS program.
The most recent amendments that came into force on December 15, 2022, will have a 3-year transition period ending on December 14, 2025. Just like with the Transition to WHMIS 2015, employers will need to ensure their workers are aware of the new amendments and are able to work safely with them.
During the transition period regulated parties can choose to comply with either the former HPR or the amended HPR, but not a combination of both. You should be ready to demonstrate which version of the HPR your product complies with upon request.
This means that someone who was just trained on the former HPR (WHMIS 2015) will have to be retrained on the amended HPR (now referred to as simply WHMIS). Contact us if you have any questions about what the new amendments mean for you or which version of WHMIS training your employees may require.
The WHMIS training course provided at SafeAndCertified.com is always one step ahead and gets updated for you so you can take the latest version of WHMIS.
