Who needs WHMIS training in Canada?
The WHMIS regulations require Employers to train their employees on WHMIS.
What about retraining them? Is there a need to retrain employees or WHMIS? Or would a worker ever need a new WHMIS certificate?
Yes, Employers will need to retrain workers on WHMIS. In December 2018 the transition to WHMIS 2015 was completed. In December 2022 amendments were made to the Hazardous Products Regulations (HPR). These amendments have a 3-year transition period in which you may use the former HPR or the amended HPR but not a combination of both. Your employees must be aware and able to demonstrate which version they are using.
If you are not sure whether you have hazardous products in your workplace, and if your employees need WHMIS, or need to renew their WHMIS training, feel free to contact us or your provincial health and safety authority for WHMIS.
