WHMIS Regulations get Updated
WHMIS was created to protect workers health and safety. In order to keep up with changing international standards, new information, and changing safety information, WHMIS is occasionally altered to make it better. Any time WHMIS receives significant changes or amendments you may need to renew your WHMIS training.
“I took WHMIS once, why take it again?” is a common thought when considering renewing WHMIS. The bottom line is that everyone in Canada will likely end up taking WHMIS at some point in their work experience, but if you continue to work where there are hazardous products you will need to renew your WHMIS. It is important for your sake, the sake of all other employees, and for compliance reasons, that you know the current WHMIS regulations and know how to handle hazardous materials according to those regulations.
Imagine there is no label on a product that is poisonous. Is it any different if there is a label on the product but you can’t read it or understand it. This is why renewing WHMIS is important.
The most recent amendments to the HPR in 2022 will have a 3-year transition period. This period ends on December 14, 2025. During this transition period you can choose to comply with the former or the amended HPR but not a combination of both.
It is important to have the right version of WHMIS in order to be compliant with the changing regulations.
